14/18 - Switzerland and the Great War

23.08.2014 - 15.02.2015

Early on in the 20th century, the world was shaken to the core by a war later known as the Great War. Not even Switzerland was left unscathed. Yet little is known about the shattering experience of the war years and the lasting changes it precipitated, and even today, there is still a lot of research to be done on the subject.

The exhibition will show the impact that the First World War had on Switzerland - and continues to have to this day. The focus will be less on the military and more on the social aspects of the war: the sense of insecurity, the threat to political cohesion, the precariousness of the food supply, the spread of poverty, social conflict and the struggle for the free movement of people and freedom to migrate. Special attention will be paid to Basel's exceptional situation as a border city.
