Museum walk

Museum sites: Dreispitz

The Dreispitz area houses three museums in close proximity: HEK (Haus der Elektronischen Künste), Kunsthaus Baselland and the Schaulager. Each with its own style and atmosphere, they offer a diversity of approaches to art and culture, and invite visitors to explore, reflect and linger.

Kunsthaus Baselland

Kunsthaus Baselland has been housed in its current building, designed by the Basel-based architects Buchner and Bründler, in the Dreispitz area in Münchenstein since 2024. It focuses on contemporary art, with changing exhibitions introducing visitors to the works of regional, national and international artists. The museum also offers guided tours, workshops and discussion formats that, together with the exhibitions, aim to give rise to new experiences through art.

Schaulager Erweiterungsbau (Schaulager and its extension)

The Schaulager was founded in Münchenstein in 2003 with the aim of providing a storage space for contemporary art works and at the same time enabling them to be shown. It was built by the Basel architect firm Herzog & de Meuron on behalf of the Laurenz foundation. At once a storage site, a research institution and a venue for exhibitions and events, Schaulager functions primarily as a platform for specialists and for research work, but also stages exhibitions and conducts projects to make contemporary art accessible to a broader range of audiences. A spatial extension is being planned to house large-scale works so that the collection of the Emanuel-Hoffmann foundation can be experienced in full.

HEK (Haus der Elektronischen Künste)

HEK (Haus der Elektronischen Künste), inaugurated on the Dreispitz site in 2011, is dedicated to contemporary art in the field of electronic and digital media. Audiences are invited to reflect on the impact of the digital world on our present-day life. With its broad variety of exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions and open desk formats, HEK represents a vibrant forum for exchange between art, research and the general public.
