Rötteln Castle – New Methods in Archaeology

April 3, 2026 |
A castle ruin majestically sits on a tree-covered hill overlooking the valley.
This exhibition was created as part of the Interreg project “Castles on the Upper Rhine,” a collaboration between the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg (SSG) and the Collectivité européenne d’Alsace (CeA). It is on display in Lörrach as a dual exhibition at Rötteln Castle and the Dreiländermuseum.
While Rötteln Castle showcases the project’s excavation findings from various castles along the Upper Rhine, the exhibition in the Hebelsaal at the Dreiländermuseum focuses on modern methods in archaeology.
These methods have yielded important new insights, particularly regarding the early history of Rötteln Castle, including the location of the curtain wall, the kitchen area, and the chapel.
Four accompanying lectures at the Dreiländermuseum will present new methods of excavation and documentation (April 14, April 28, May 12, and June 2, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. each day), as well as geophysics and the analysis of animal bones and metals.
Admission to the Hebelsaal is free!
