The first collection presentation of the year invites visitors on a voyage of discovery with numerous highlights from the Fondation Beyeler's collection - and at the same time to reflect on the concept of "sensation". The starting point is Paul Cezanne, to whom the Fondation Beyeler is also dedicating an exhibition. In his letters, Cezanne repeatedly spoke of "sensations colorantes" (impressions of colour) as a fundamental prerequisite for his painting. He understood these as a direct transfer of his own colourful visual impressions, the aforementioned "sensations", onto the canvas. In German, the word "Sensation" can be translated as perception or sensory impression as well as sensation and feeling. The collection presentation therefore centres on works by artists who make their sensations tangible either through a special perceptual quality or through a strong emotional intensity, including works by Lucas Arruda, Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, Wassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Claude Monet, Susan Philipsz, Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol and Issy Wood.
