Janiva Ellis (b. 1987) utilises a wide range of popular imagery and familiar art historical motifs, which she creatively manipulates to create dynamic moments with ever-changing references that are humorous, captivating and ambiguous. In her practice, she examines the persistent myths of white supremacy that are firmly anchored in dominant cultural narratives, revealing the contradictions as well as the destruction they have left in their wake. Drawing on the tradition of figuration, she raises questions of visibility, erasure and survival. The fact that her paintings oscillate between controlled precision and raw gestures always opens up new scope for interpretation. Ellis will be showing a series of new paintings at the Kunsthalle Basel in her first institutional solo exhibition in Europe.
