Silk ribbon. Capital, art & crisis - a guided tour for people with and without visual impairments

What does the inconspicuous spinning thread of an Asian butterfly have to do with the rise and fall of an entire industry in the Basel region? The silk ribbon industry, which dates back to the 16th century, developed into the most important employer in the Basel region in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Basel silk ribbons were indispensable in international fashion worldwide.

Colourful woven silk ribbons with different motifs in various qualities as well as cocoons, scullions, boats and printing blocks are on display during this guided tour through the exhibition "Silk Ribbon. Capital, Art & Crisis" exhibition. The tour is open to all interested parties and is designed for people with visual impairments - visitors can touch numerous objects. These original objects as well as an operational sawyer's loom from 1900 and excerpts from conversations with contemporary witnesses allow visitors to experience by touch and hearing how a silkworm pupa is turned into a precious silk ribbon.
