The largest bronze model of a Roman city. Hands on Augusta Raurica!
Today: 10.00 AM - 5.00 PM
Roman travellers were greeted at the gates of Augusta Raurica by an ostentatious funerary monument of a confident individual which paid homage to his influential family. Nowadays the monument stands in front of the east gate and, surrounded by an idyllic animal park with rare old breeds, transports visitors back in time. Grazing pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, peacocks, grey geese, living animals of the kind the Romans had and their history as well as ancient ruins and a panoramic view of the historical skyline all paint a vivid picture at the entrance to the Roman metropolis of what life must have been like 1800 years ago and invite you to take an enjoyable and educational walk in the newly designed park outside the gates of the ancient town.

Off to visit the Roman period! The largest archaeological park in Switzerland offers more than thirty surprising, unique and exciting sights including the most impressive Roman theatre north of the Alps, the atmospheric Roman house and on display in the museum the largest collection of late antique silver.
Events in the Roman theatre
An ambience reminiscent of 1800 years ago: the tiers of the impressive theatre in Augusta Raurica at the time would have been packed with up to 10,000 spectators. Today, there is seating for only 2,000 visitors. The atmosphere, however, is still beyond compare.
The largest Roman festival in Switzerland takes place in Augusta Raurica annually on the last weekend in August. The colourful festival is well known far and wide and attracts thousands of visitors delighted to be transported back to the Roman period. One of the secrets of its success is its unique atmosphere. Surrounded by authentic monuments and entertaining spectacles, visitors learn about modern scientific research presented in an easily comprehensible manner.
The next Roman festival will take place on 28 & 29 August 2021.
