Dreiländermuseum

Art and Nazism

Today: Closed

08 August 2020 - 11 July 2021

The exhibition presents paintings, graphics and sculptures giving evidence of the time between 1933 and 1945. Around 100 works by prominent artists from Baden, including Hans Adolf Bühler, Adolf Strübe, Hermann Burte, Max Laeuger and August Babberger, are viewed in the context of the Nazi dictatorship. Biographical gaps will be filled with the help of numerous sources and documents that provide information about the art scene of the time. The wide range of artistic creation extends from spurned «degenerate» styles to state commissions and «blood-and-blood painting». A central question remains to what extent adaptation and silent participation differ artistically and ethically from opportunism and active promotion.

In addition to this art exhibition, the Three Countries Museum presents current research results on the Lörrach districts of Brombach, Haagen and Hauingen during the Nazi era.

1870/71: neighbours at war

22 May 2021 - 09 January 2022

The Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 barely plays a role in collective memory. The consequences were not only serious for Baden and the Upper Rhine, but also for both nations. The victory over Napoleon III made France a republic and brought German unity under Kaiser Wilhelm I. ...
