Historisches Museum Basel – Barfüsserkirche

75th Anniversary of the Basler Marionetten Theater

Today: 10.00 AM - 5.00 PM

15 February 2019 - 18 August 2019

To mark the 75th anniversary of the Basler Marionetten Theater founded by Richard Koelner, Basel Historical Museum is to host a presentation of puppets and props from several of its productions in the Barfüsserkirche.

The theatre celebrated its debut with Das alte Puppenspiel vom Doktor Faust after Karl Simrock on 27 March 1944; and after moving into the Zehntenkeller on the Münsterplatz in 1956, it became Basel’s first theatre to regularly stage plays for children in Basel dialect. Since then, its programme has always featured as many productions for children as for adults.

The presentation will begin with the classical puppets from Der Dreispitz, the figures for which were created by Richard Koelner himself and made their debut in 1953. Music, whether classical or contemporary, has always been an important part of the theatre’s productions. Doubtless many visitors will have vivid memories of the singing street-sweeper Herr Butz from the 1968 production, Dr Krokophant, for example. Here they will have a chance to reconnect with Herr Butz as well as the kiosk lady Frau Kugeli and of course the Krokophant himself. There will also be table-top puppets from Die fürchterliche Fünf of 2005, which the theatre’s long-standing director Wolfgang Burn created after the picture book by Wolf Erlbruch.

Institution

The Basel Historical Museum with its three sites is widely regarded as the most important museum of cultural history on the Upper Rhine. It collects, conserves, records and researches objects and artefacts of relevance to our cultural heritage for future generations, tells visitors the story of Basel, and is a place for discourse and engagement with both present and future.

The Basel Historical Museum, housed in the Barfüsserkirche since 1894, shows selected aspects of the history of Basel from prehistoric times to the present. The focus of the exhibits from the pre-Reformation period is on sacred works of art such as the Basel Dance of Death and Basel Cathedral Treasury. The exhibition in the basement, headed “Understanding the World”, comprises a magnificent array of medieval tapestries with their fantasy worlds and scenes of real life, the Renaissance and Baroque collections, now grouped together in one “Great Cabinet of Curiosities”, and Basel’s rich archaeological heritage. Among the other highlights are the coin cabinet and the Burgundian Booty.
