Since the 1990s, Pia Fries has undisputedly been one of the most important international figures in the field of painting. Born in 1955 in Beromünster, Switzerland, she relocated to Germany in the 1980s to study at the renowned Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Gerhard Richter, where she became one of his master students. She has since developed an individual, distinctive body of work, which explores the possibilities of painting and space through the medium's intrinsic materiality. This new, free, and also open concept of painting has earned Pia Fries numerous awards and invitations to renowned exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, as well as appointments to several professorships. Alongside works from the 1990s, the exhibition at Kunsthaus Baselland shows her most recent works for the first time in Switzerland. They represent a new artistic milestone for Pia Fries. An accompanying catalog is in the works.

Institution

The Kunsthaus Baselland is among the leading exhibition spaces for regional, national and international contemporary art in the Basel region. A special focus is put on artist of different age groups, which are working in Basel as well as on international working artists, which are working explicit with the place and the architecture of the Kunsthaus. Partially first big individual exhibitions for invited artists will be realized.

Access

From SBB train station
About 15 min. from SBB: Tram no. 8, 10, 11 or on foot to Aeschenplatz (1 stop), from Aeschenplatz tram no. 14 in the direction St. Jakob/Muttenz/Pratteln to St. Jakob stop. Walk in the same direction as the tram you have just left until you cross a bridge. The Kunsthaus is on the left hand side.

From Badischer Bahnhof (German train station)
36 bus in the direction Schifflände via Neubad to St. Jakob stop, from there on foot to the Kunsthaus Baselland.

By car, A2
Exit Basel Süd/St. Jakob, turn left, past the stadium, direction Muttenz, at the first crossroads turn left and then directly left into the carpark.

By car, J18
Exit Muttenz/Industrie/St. Jakob, over the crossroads then first entry left into the Kunsthaus Baselland.

The Kunsthaus Baselland has limited parking on site.
