Schaulager

6 DAYS OPEN STORAGE

Today: Closed

11 June 2019 - 16 June 2019

During Art Basel 2019, Schaulager offers tours, free of charge, through selected storage spaces. Schaulager houses the diverse and steadily growing collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation. Founded in memory of Emanuel Hoffmann in 1933, the collection comprises painting, sculpture, photography, video and film as well as complex multimedia installations. Works by over 160 artists are stored at Schaulager when they are not on view in temporary exhibitions, for instance, in the Kunstmuseum Basel‘s presentations of the permanent collection or on loan elsewhere. The objects in open storage are installed and mounted, in contrast to the conventional method of dismantling art works and packing them in crates. This enables curators and conservators to observe and examine the condition of the artworks on a permanent basis. This year Schaulager is making an exception by opening its doors to the public for six days, giving access to a selection of storage spaces. Ordinarily, the depot is open only to specialists for purposes of scientific research and mediation. Don‘t miss this one-time opportunity to take a firsthand look inside Schaulager and learn about the institution‘s unique approach to storage and preservation.
