Guided Tour

Cartoonmuseum Basel

Curator-guided tour

03 October 2021 | 2.00 PM - 3.00 PM

Since her beginnings at The Guardian, Posy Simmonds has been a precise and astute observer of women’s position in society. Her graphic novels, named after their protagonists Gemma Bovery, Tamara Drewe and Cassandra Darke, also satirically reflect society – and are peppered with references to literary classics. This curator-guided tour highlights the feminist aspect of Posy Simmonds’s oeuvre and pays tribute to her importance as a female pioneer and political cartoonist.

Institution

The Cartoonmuseum Basel is the only museum of its kind devoted exclusively to satirical art – from the caricature to the comic. The Late Gothic building on its historic site also includes an unexpected new building by Herzog & de Meuron. Varying, attractively designed exhibitions on political and social themes show the considerable scope of the humorous drawing and the great diversity of artistic techniques. Equal attention is paid to both classical works, some from the museum’s own stocks, and contemporary works.
