Medienkultur A-Z: Memes

22 June 2022 | 6.00 PM - 7.30 PM

Internet memes increasingly help steer politics, culture, sociality and consumption today. They are cheap and easy to make, disseminate and monetise. As forms of civic expression, they hold symbolic and material power within global digital cultures and can quickly spread from online platforms into seemingly offline spheres. Idil Galip will start the session off with a talk in which she will provide a brief overview of internet memes and show why we can consider them the building blocks of contemporary digital culture.

Idil’s talk will be followed by a panel discussion between her, Frances Breden and Harley Aussoleil of the queer art collective, COVEN BERLIN in which they will delve deeper into the theme as well as answer and discuss audience questions. Idil, Frances and Harley have worked together in the past, running DANK MEMES 4 DANK TIMES. Join us for a bewitching evening and get the latest "tea" on meme-culture.
