Inside Motion. Medicine in the Fourth Dimension

The exhibition provides insight into the moving interior of the living human body. Visitors are invited to discover the worlds of modern medicine and the human body via virtual and augmented reality. On three workshops, the researchers who developed these technologies at University of Basel will discuss their work with their audience.

The exhibition is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation within the Agora-Scheme. It is organized by the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the Medical Faculty at University of Basel in cooperation with the Pharmaziemuseum Basel and the Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures of the Academy of Art and Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland.

Institution

The Pharmacy Museum of the University of Basel currently contains one of the largest and most significant collections relating to the history of pharmacy. The museum holds a scientific collection from the 1920s, which has been conserved until today. Highlights include apothecaries’ shops, historic medicaments, laboratory equipment, a complete alchemist’s laboratory, microscopes and a famous collection of pharmacy ceramics (15th to 19th centuries). The house «Zum vorderen Sessel» is a historic location where famous men such as Erasmus of Rotterdam and Paracelsus were frequent visitors. Historic drugstore «Herbarium» in a Pharmacy of of the old city of Basel.

History of Pharmacy

Permanent exhibition

The Museum of Pharmacy exhibits one of the world's largest collections dedicated to the history of pharmacy. Alchemistic laboratories, pharmacies, scientific instruments, ceramics, and many other highlights are shown in a medieval house.
